Group Classes
Introduction to Nose Work Series
This series of three class sessions introduces your dog to the sport of canine scent work and introduces you, the handler, to the ways that your dog communicates scent movement and location. During this series of classes, your dog will search for food or toys. As a team, you will be exposed to a wide variety of odor problems in a number of different types of searches, including containers, interiors, vehicles, and exteriors. Along the way, you’ll learn how to read your dog’s body language, how your body language communicates meaning to your dog, and how to maneuver as a team. This series is designed to build a strong team foundation.
Introduction to Odor Series
This series of three class sessions introduces your dog to three target odors, starting with sweet birch, and later adding anise and clove. Having a strong foundation from the Introduction to Nose Work series allows you and your dog to progress rapidly to the point that you are ready for your Odor Recognition Tests and, if desired, competition.
Travel Classes
Travel classes are designed to expose your dog to a variety of different search environments. They are held at different public locations such as parks, shopping centers, libraries, and community centers. Each location has unique characteristics to challenge your dog. Exposure to "search anytime, anywhere" creates a strong search dog—one who is confident searching in many different environments. These classes are not suitable for all dogs, but are recommended for teams who would like to compete.
Virtual Classes
ARL Dog Sports’ online classes are designed for handlers who require flexibility in their training schedule. These classes present unique challenges for handlers, who must be able to read an exercise and determine how best to execute the objective of that exercise with the search environment available to them. Any level of dog may participate, including dogs who may never have experienced canine scent work. More novice teams might be better served by taking at least one in-person class before jumping into ARL Dog Sports’ online version.
